(i) Zip2 Corporation: In 1995, Elon Musk started his first IT company Zip2. In the initial years he worked hard from early morning till late night to keep the company afloat. He slept in his office and used the local stadium's locker room to shower. This helped him save money and keep the company afloat.

At the time, the Internet was rapidly developing, and Zip2 was providing content for the new websites of both the New York Times and the Chicago Tribune. In 1999, Compaq Computer Corporation (a division of Hewlett-Packard) purchased Zip2 for $307 million in cash and $34 million in securities. This made Zip2 the most expensive company ever sold for cash.

(ii) PayPal: In 1999, Elon Musk started working on an electronic payment system. The X.com startup became his new business in March 2000, when it merged with another company, Confinity, which was run by Peter Thiel and Max Lechin.

After the merger, X.com became PayPal. Elon Musk becomes Chairman and CEO of PayPal.

In 2002, PayPal was purchased by Ebay for $1.5 billion. Before the sale, Elon Musk owned 11 percent of PayPal stock.
